To become a software tester, coding knowledge is not *absolutely* essential.
To be the best, quickly retest and create a massive automation test suite. Coding is the only way to proceed.
Remember that coding is used for test automation. Not really an exam. Having said that, there are a few applications that do not interact with users at all! For testing them, you would need some knowledge with tools/coding, such as web services.
