I don’t think anyone can persuade a boss to promote someone. What a person can do is set clear and well-defined wise goals that will have a significant impact on the firm. A promotion is not a “solo” decision, but rather the result of a collaborative process involving multiple managers. That is why setting smart goals is crucial to anyone’s success. In sales, for example, it is impossible to disguise a high-performing person who, if consistent, will most likely be promoted. I believe that setting smart goals, fighting for positions on essential corporate projects and initiatives, and performing well are all steps toward a promotion.
