What Prayagraj girl Shakti Dubey said after tops UPSC : That was the lowest point……
UPSC CSE Result 2024 : Wearing a blue kurti and silver jhumkas, 29-year-old Shakti Dubey sat silently in a “interview room” inside an IAS tutoring center in Karol Bagh, Delhi. Her phone kept buzzing. “I’m going to sleep peacefully tonight,” she says, tapping her phone to silence it. Jo neend puri nahi hui, aaj usko pura karungi (I’ll make up for the years of sleep deprivation today) for years. But sleep would have to wait a little while longer because Dubey finished first out of 5.83 lakh applicants in Tuesday’s UPSC Civil Services Examination, earning him the All India Rank 1 spot.

Women have dominated the civil services tests, which are regarded as the most difficult of the competitive exams, with the exception of last year, when Aditya Srivastava took first place. Three of the top five this year are female: Dubey is ranked first, followed by Shah Margi Chirag at number four and Harshita Goyal at number two. Akash Garg is ranked five, and Dongre Archit Parag is ranked three.
Dubey, who is originally from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, started her UPSC career in 2018. She graduated from Banaras Hindu University with a degree in biochemistry and had aspirations of becoming a doctor. “In school, I studied physics, chemistry, and biology, or PCB. But according to my seniority, I was given dentistry. I therefore made the decision to pursue a BSc instead,” she explains.
But after five failed tries, the journey has not been simple. “I didn’t even pass the preliminary exams on my first three tries. I made it to the interview round in the fourth, but I was unable to pass. “I missed the cut-off by 12 marks last year,” she explains. “My life was at its lowest point at that time. I genuinely believed that I should give up.
She didn’t. Rather, she moved to Delhi after packing her things. “Only my family supported me during this journey,” she claims. Her father works as a sub-inspector for the Uttar Pradesh Police, while her mother stays at home. She claims that because she was the oldest of three siblings, she was always responsible. “I was trusted more after… My family has always believed in me the most.
Dubey kept her sights fixed on the objective during this trip. She created a chart, followed it, and viewed each day as a baby step. “I would complete my eight to ten hours of study time if I had to, and then take the following day off.” The only way to make it through this path is to do that,” she said.
Now that the votes are in, Dubey says her native state is still her #1 choice for her cadre.
“Having spent my entire life in Uttar Pradesh, I have a deeper understanding of its problems. Thus, my top choice will always be Uttar Pradesh.
When asked which problems she would like to focus on, she responds, “Women’s safety will always be a concern.” Even when I go out late, I start to look at the time and let my parents know where I am. I wish to improve safety and security when I return home.
