In India, the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2003 imposes a fine of up to Rs 200 for public place smoking. In 2013, Karnataka started implementing the law. The owner of the building may also be subject to cumulative fines under the legislation. For instance, if five people smoke near a business, each of them may be fined Rs. 200, but the business owner may be assessed Rs. 1,000 for all five of them.
